Referees celebrate centenary with new trophy for local Colts rivalry

17 May

Hautapu Sports’ Colts will play for a new trophy this weekend when they meet local rivals Leamington at Memorial Park.

The match will decide the first holders of the Centenary Cup, donated by the Cambridge Rugby Referees Association to mark the 100th anniversary of their formation.

The CRRA says the launch of the trophy — to be contested between the two clubs’ promising young players — provides the highlight of the weekend’s centenary celebrations.

“We hope to see the two colts teams play for this for many years to come,” the CRRA says.

Meanwhile, local referees have been proudly wearing their centenary edition of their traditional blue and white jerseys as they officiate around the province.

“Many players and teams have positively commented on how great the jerseys look, and have commended us on 100 years of commitment to rugby.”

After the Colts game, referees and their guests will gather for a Centenary Dinner at the Cambridge Raceway, starting at 6pm.
